What Is Self-Care?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability.”

The next time you’re in a stressful situation, try this deep breathing exercise:

  1. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  2. Breathe in for a count of four.
  3. Hold your breath for a count of four.
  4. Breathe out for a count of four.
  5. Repeat four times (or as needed).

Surround Yourself With Positive People

Humans are social creatures. We thrive on personal connection and face-to-face interactions (which is why support groups are so effective). Because of this social connection, our moods and emotions often reflect those around us.

If you surround yourself with people who remain positive, it will ultimately lift your own mood. Conversely, if you only spend time with negative people, your own mood will follow suit. Spend your time with those who are supportive, honest, and loyal.

Regular Exercise and Physical Activity

As you can imagine, your physical health and mental health are strongly connected. Good physical health is a great way to improve your mental well-being — and that can be achieved with regular exercise.

Physical activity releases endorphins in your brain, improving your mood. Ultimately, if you feel good inside your body, your mind feels good, too.

Make Sleep a Priority

Sleep is crucial for mental health, and not getting enough sleep can lead to depression and anxiety. Lack of sleep can also exasperate symptoms of depression and anxiety, leading to a lack of energy, loss of interest in activities, low self-worth, and diminishing self-confidence.

When you’re getting enough sleep, your body can start healing and improving your overall mood and well-being.

What Causes Poor Quality Sleep?

Maybe the bed isn’t comfortable. Perhaps the room temperature is too hot or too cold. It could even be something as simple as too much blue light exposure before bed.
