Meridian’s occupational health services now include acupuncture, a holistic medical approach focused on correcting imbalances of energy in the body.
This unique form of traditional Chinese medicine is completed by an acupuncturist who inserts thin acupuncture needles into specific points of the skin. Acupuncture serves many purposes, from alleviating seasonal allergies to managing anxiety and delivering pain relief. Yet, even though the practice has been utilized for more than 2,500 years, few people recognize its wide range of benefits.
The use of acupuncture balances the energy flow in the body – known as chi or qi (chee) – to alleviate a wide variety of symptoms: headaches, stress, dental pain, depression, arthritis, allergies, weakened immunity, nausea (associated with pregnancy or cancer treatment), high blood pressure, menstrual cramps and more. Meridian’s acupuncture services can be utilized on their own or as a dual modality treatment.

How do I know if acupuncture would be a good option for me?
It’s important to discuss health-related conditions with your acupuncturist or health care provider before any type of treatment is rendered. For example, individuals at risk for infection or who may be pregnant should always make mention of those circumstances before obtaining acupuncture services. For additional information on acupuncture, visit https://www.nccih.nih.gov/.
Are acupuncturists licensed?
Always utilize a professional, licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.). Certification goes through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Medical doctors or osteopaths often make referrals (or write an order for acupuncture treatments, but clients can also be self-referred.
Are there risks associated with acupuncture?
Acupuncture has very few (if any) side effects, especially if you have chosen a licensed practitioner who understands the importance of using single-use, sterile needles and correct placement into acupuncture points. The practice’s low risk is why it has become an increasingly popular option for individuals who have had difficulty managing pain with more conventional therapies and treatments. Common side effects from treatment include minor bruising or soreness where the needles were inserted.
What does an acupuncture procedure look like?
Acupoints are located throughout the body (sometimes far from the area of pain or concern for the patient). You will be given a gown to wear and will be asked to lie down on a comfortable treatment table in order to begin the session. Thin needles are then inserted at strategic points, which people often don’t even feel. The acupuncturist may apply electrical stimulation to the needles, if necessary, and the needles will remain in place for 10-20 minutes. The number of treatments needed is dependent upon the type of issue being addressed and the relief felt after each session.
Are acupuncture treatments private pay or covered by insurance?
Before seeking treatment, feel free to contact Meridian HealthCare directly to see if services would be covered under your insurance plan. Some insurers cover acupuncture treatment while others do not. Insurance, VA benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, and self-pay options are available.
Integrative health (combining traditional methods with complementary and alternative medicine) might be exactly what you need in order to finally address concerns or conditions that you’ve been dealing with for years!
